GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz.– A 55-year-old Virginia man passed away in the Grand Canyon while attempting to trek from the South Rim to the North Rim in a single day, a range of 21 miles, authorities stated Monday.
Grand Canyon National Park authorities determined the hiker who passed away Saturday as Ranjith Varma of Manassas. The area where he passed away is towards completion of the South Rim to North Rim trek, which can take 12 to 15 hours to finish.
Around 2 p.m. Saturday, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center reported getting an emergency situation call of a hiker in distress on the North Kaibab Trail, about one mile south of Cottonwood Campground. Varma ended up being unresponsive, and onlookers and rangers both unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate him, park authorities stated.
It wasn’t instantly clear if his death was heat-related. An examination was being performed by the Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
The heat on Saturday was 87 degrees (30.5 Celsius) at Grand Canyon Airport, which has to do with a 20-minute drive from the South Rim.
Previously this year, a 36-year-old Indiana lady passed away while attempting to trek to the Colorado River and back in a day. She was discovered unconscious on May 14 along the Bright Angel Trail above the Three-Mile Resthouse.
On July 3, a 57-year-old female passed away while on an eight-mile walking in triple-digit heat at Grand Canyon National Park.
Park authorities state summertime temperature levels on exposed parts of the path can reach over 120 degrees (49 Celsius).
