Missouri Senior Living Facility Allegedly Bans Residents’ Bible Study, May Face Legal Action

A Christian legal advocacy group states it might take legal action against a Missouri senior living center for presumably prohibiting locals from holding Bible research studies.

Abigail Southerland with American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) declares that when their customer attempted to hold a Bible research study for citizens, the center provided typical areas offered to reserve.

In June, after citizens held the weekly Bible research study over a number of months “without concern,” Southerland, who works as senior lawsuits counsel for ACLJ, stated their customer was informed to stop the research studies “due to the fact that some locals were supposedly upset by the Bible research study,” The Christian Post reports.

Management declared the Bible research study was not enabled considering that the center remains in a federally moneyed structure and Bible research studies are forbidden under FHA standards.

“This is actually the precise reverse of the law,” Southerland asserted.

The resident connected to the ACLJ and had them send out a need letter on their behalf, stating, “Not just does the FHA enable a Bible research study on federally moneyed home, however it likewise specifically forbids discrimination on the basis of faith in regard to supplying center services.

“The [Department of Justice] has actually made it clear that ‘somebody might not, for instance, be omitted from booking a typical space for a prayer conference when the space might be scheduled for different equivalent nonreligious usages,'” she stated.

Southerland stated if the senior living complex does not “rapidly reverse course for our customer, we will submit a federal claim to secure her spiritual liberty.”

“Unfortunately, a number of the most susceptible amongst us, such as our seniors, experience offenses of the very liberties that our law is enacted to secure,” she included.

This isn’t the very first case including a Bible research study and a senior living.

In January 2020, a Virginia couple was threatened with expulsion from their retirement community if they continued to hold Bible research study conferences. They reached a settlement and were permitted to continue holding Bible classes and motion picture screenings in the neighborhood space.
