Alabama limits transgender professional athletes in college sports

May 31 (UPI)– It is now prohibited for Alabama public college organizations to enable transgender individuals to take part in sports that do not refer the gender they were appointed at birth, according to a brand-new law.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed the expense into law on Tuesday, which includes onto previous legislation from 2021 that makes professional athletes at the K-12 level take part in sports that line up with the gender they were appointed at birth.

“Look, if you are a biological male, you are not going to be completing in females’s and ladies’ sports in Alabama,” Ivey stated in a declaration. “It’s about fairness, plain and basic.”

The Human Rights Campaign condemned the state’s brand-new law on Tuesday.

“By signing HB 261 into law, Governor Ivey is actively participating in the organized attack versus LGBTQ+ individuals,” Human Rights Campaign Alabama State Director Carmarion D. Anderson-Harvey stated in a declaration. “From determining what restrooms we can utilize to blatantly disregarding the real issues in females’s sports, these political leaders are making Alabama a significantly hostile location for transgender individuals and the LGBTQ+ neighborhood as a whole.”

A court obstacle obstructed an Alabama law passed in 2015 that would make it a criminal activity for medical professionals or moms and dads to authorize gender-affirming healthcare to minors.
